Impact Assessment Study on the Living Conditions of Women and Children, Haïti
Abstract: In response to the earthquake that hit Haiti on 12 January 2010, Solidarités International (SI) provided urgent basic services of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in over 52 Internally Displaced Peoples (IDP) Sites, and played a vital role in preventing the spread of the cholera outbreak in October of that same year and improving medical care for people affected by the epidemic and to reduce risks of further propagation.

Giving birth at a maternity hospital: the key strategic option to be adopted in order to combat maternal and neonatal mortality in Mali
Abstract: The end result of the past 40 years of experience in combating maternal mortality in Mali suggests that the emphasis should be changed, and that giving birth at a maternity hospital should be the basic strategic option chosen. This means creating “compounds set aside for mothers-to-be”, where women approaching the end of their pregnancy will be invited to come and await the onset of labour, and at the same time enjoy the rest they need.

From malnutrition to HIV: spirulina is an effective solution which continues to reveal its secrets
Abstract: Spirulina presents major advantages in the fight against chronic malnutrition based on its micronutrient composition, its health potential and the fact that it can be grown locally. International solidarity associations, such as Antenna Technologies and Entrepreneurs du Monde whose goal is to reduce extreme poverty and public health problems in developing countries, have undertakenproduction and distribution programmes of spirulina, especially in West Africa.

Analysis of blood transfusion requirements during the gravido-puerperal period in a hospital in Ouagadougou
Abstract: This work was carried out with the aim to analyze the needs covered and not covered in blood during the gravid-postpartum period. This retrospective study covered the period from 1st January 2007 to December 31, 2009. It took into account the records of patients admitted to a direct or indirect obstetric causes, and has received an indication for transfusion.

Integrated management of childhood illness within communities in Togo
Abstract: Togo is one of the poorest countries on our planet. The lack of knowledge of good hygiene practices compounded by the scarcity of resources in health facilities affects the chances of survival for children and pregnant women. Plan France and its partners developed a 42 month pilot project aimed at reducing mortality in children under five years of age and pregnant women in Togo by teaching good practice guidelines in prevention and care developed by the WHO.

Abstract: The adoption of Key Family Practices (KFP) plays a determinant role in improving the health and nutritional status of children under 5 years of age. In its community-based nutrition programme, the French Red Cross implemented a strategy of promoting KFPs in 75 villages in the Tanout and Magaria departments of Zinder region in Niger.

Combining local resources and mobile telephony to increase resort to care and reduce child mortality in Mali
Abstract: In Mali, 1 child out of 6 does not reach the age of five. Most of these deaths could be avoided: children die mostly from untreated benign pathologies that could be easily cured locally. Though medical treatments are available in the local primary health centers, people resort too little and too late to healthcare, for cultural, financial and geographical reasons.

HIV Viral Load Testing in Laos
Abstract: The number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the People’s Democratic Republic of Laos (also known as Laos PDR) is estimated at 13,600 and the number of people in need of antiretroviral therapy at 8,000. Today, around 3,200 HIV infected individuals receive treatment in seven centres throughout the country. Until recently, antiretroviral treated patients were followed-up only on the basis of clinical and immunological criteria.
